Congratulations and welcome to the Nice Computer Man. We look forward to seeing you for your one day website building course.

Pre-course materials

It's required that before the course you choose a template and gather content that will be used to build your website. If you are at all unsure about this or anything mentioned here then drop us a line on our contacts system and we will gladly guide you through and explain everything in plain English.

Templates

A template specifies the visual layout of your website; it can be considered the scaffolding from which your website's content hangs. It determines the 'look and feel' of your website and where everything goes.

The image on the right is an example of a template map. Click on it to view it in more detail. It gives you an idea of what a template does. All the defined areas are places that you can add content or features when building your site.

You can view the many templates available and choose one on the Website Templates page.

Gathering Content

It is important that you come to the course with the "content" (images and text) that will make up your website. You will need to bring this with you on a CD or USB memory stick on the day of the course.

Again, we are always on hand to help you with any questions you may have, please drop us a line and we will do our utmost to help you.

Quite often website content already exists in some form i.e. images and text from your company's existing published materials like brochures and/or flyers, or possibly its current website.

Here are some examples of the content you may want on your website:

  • Your company logo.
  • Images and photos relating to your company, staff, products and processes. This site has many links to free stock photo resources on the web. Also, search the web, there are many similar sources for images and photos.
  • Descriptive text relating to your company and its products and/or services and processes.
  • Slogans, latest news, press releases, product research.
  • Customer testimonials, your company vision, mission and culture.
  • Contact details for your company.
It is also beneficial to consider how you want your website structured and what individual web pages your company's site should have.
Most company websites will have a Home or front page, a number of product and/or service pages, and Contact Information page(s). Other possible pages could be: Latest News, FAQ, Careers, Press, Research.

It's better to come to the course with too much content, and too many ideas, than not enough!
